Josie Newberry

A Shining Example of School Spirit and Academic Excellence

Meet the cheerleader, scholar, and community advocate who’s making her mark at MHS.

“Our school really includes everyone and doesn’t put down anyone.”

In the heart of Momence, where the cornfields stretch as far as the eye can see, this Prairie State student stands out not only for her academic prowess but also for her infectious school spirit and unwavering dedication to her community. Josie Newberry, a rising senior at Momence High School, embodies the very essence of what it means to be a proud member of our vibrant and diverse community.

Josie’s journey through high school has been marked by a series of accomplishments and a deep-seated love for her school. As she spells out her name with a smile—”J-o-s-i-e N-e-w-b-e-r-r-y”—it becomes clear that her enthusiasm for her school and her future is palpable.

A dedicated student, Josie is particularly excited about her upcoming senior year. “I’m really excited for next year because I’m having a lot of new teachers that I haven’t had that I’m very excited to have,” she shares. Among these teachers is Ms. Boros, who will be teaching AP Literature. Josie’s passion for English and literature is evident as she discusses her love for diving deep into the underlying messages of literary works.

But Josie’s interests aren’t confined to the classroom. She has been a cheerleader since she was five years old, a role that has allowed her to engage deeply with her school and community. “I love cheering for football games, basketball games. Just... being a cheerleader brings the community together as well,” she says. Her cheer team, which she fondly refers to as her “second family,” holds a special place in her heart, and their team bonding activities have forged unbreakable friendships.

Josie’s strong sense of community is further highlighted when she speaks about her pride in Momence. “I do not let anyone talk bad about it,” she asserts. The school’s inclusivity and diversity are sources of pride for her, and she believes these qualities make Momence a unique and welcoming place. “Our school really includes everyone and doesn’t put down anyone,” she emphasizes, noting how this inclusivity prepares students for the diverse world beyond high school.

Her inspiration comes, in large part, from her mother, who pursued a college degree while raising four children. “My mom had us four girls, and she hadn’t gone to college yet, but she went to college after she had kids and still is very successful,” Josie says with admiration. This determination and resilience have clearly rubbed off on Josie, who has her sights set on attending Illinois State University (ISU) to study business management or human resources.

Reflecting on her high school years, Josie notes the supportive relationships she has formed with her teachers. She speaks highly of Mr. Toberman, a history teacher known for his genuine concern for his students’ well-being. “He really gets involved and makes sure everyone is okay, ready to learn for the day,” she says. Similarly, she praises Ms. Boros and Señora Jaramillo for their dedication to building strong, supportive relationships with their students.

When asked what advice she would give to her younger self, Josie stresses the importance of confidence and inclusivity. “You don’t have to fit in,” she says. “We’re all one family here.” This philosophy has guided her throughout her high school years and will undoubtedly continue to do so as she embarks on her college journey.

Josie’s plans for the future are ambitious, yet grounded in a deep sense of responsibility and community. She is determined to travel and explore opportunities beyond Illinois, drawing inspiration from her sister’s experiences in Georgia. Whether she pursues a business degree at ISU or explores other prestigious universities, one thing is certain: Josie Newberry is a force to be reckoned with.

As she prepares for her final year at Momence High School, Josie remains focused on her goals while cherishing the moments and memories she has made. Her journey is a testament to the power of community, the importance of inclusivity, and the impact of a supportive educational environment. With her unwavering determination and infectious school spirit, Josie Newberry is poised to make a lasting impact wherever she goes.

In the words of Josie herself, “I definitely believe that going to college is really important.” And with her remarkable track record, there’s no doubt that Josie will continue to shine brightly, making her school, her family, and her community proud.
