Azlin Pfantz

A Creative Force

From homeschooling to high school track meets, Azlin Pfantz finds her path and inspires her community.

“There’s a lot of different people here, and we all get along really well.”

Azlin Pfantz, a rising senior at Momence High School, is no stranger to change and challenges. Born in Kankakee County and raised in Hopkins, Azlin transitioned from homeschooling to high school, a journey that has shaped her into a resilient and dynamic individual. With a passion for creativity and a drive for excellence, she embodies the spirit of perseverance and community that defines Momence.

Junior year is often touted as the toughest in high school, and for Azlin, it has been no different. “Spanish has been the most challenging for me,” she admits. But Azlin isn’t one to back down from a challenge. With the support of her friends, some of whom are native Spanish speakers, she navigates the complexities of the language, embodying the determination that has marked her high school journey.

Beyond academics, Azlin is an athlete, balancing the rigors of her studies with her love for sports. As a member of the basketball team and a competitor in track and field, she finds solace and strength in physical activity. Currently in track season, Azlin participates in shot put and discus, with dreams of making it to the state level. “I think I’m doing pretty well,” she says modestly, though her eyes shine with the hope of victory.

While sports keep her grounded, it’s Azlin’s love for English and art that truly sets her apart. She finds joy in writing and drawing, activities that allow her to express her thoughts and emotions. “I like writing, making up stories, and getting opinions through argumentative essays,” she explains. This passion for creativity is something she has nurtured since the fifth grade, and it continues to be a significant part of her identity.

Her teachers, especially Mr. Fahey, Ms. Ader and Ms. Barnett, have been instrumental in her growth. “They’ve helped me grow a lot since freshman year,” Azlin shares, appreciating the guidance and support that have eased her transition from homeschooling to high school.

As Azlin approaches her senior year, her thoughts naturally drift to the future. She has her sights set on trade school or college, with a particular interest in welding. “Welding pays well and involves a lot of creativity,” she says. It’s a profession that not only promises financial stability but also offers her a creative outlet, a perfect blend of her practical and artistic inclinations.

While Azlin hopes to stay close to home, she is open to following work opportunities wherever they may lead. “I would like to remain home, but if work takes me elsewhere, I’ll go with it,” she says pragmatically. Her adaptability and willingness to embrace change are qualities that will undoubtedly serve her well in any path she chooses.

Azlin’s experiences have given her a unique perspective on the community of Momence. “Probably the diversity,” she says when asked what she loves most about her school. “There’s a lot of different people here, and we all get along really well.” This sense of inclusivity and camaraderie is something she values deeply, having experienced different educational environments throughout her life.

Despite her varied experiences, Azlin remains firmly rooted in the community. She appreciates the close-knit, familylike atmosphere of Momence High School, where everyone knows each other and works together. It’s a sentiment she hopes her peers share, recognizing the special bond they all have in this small but vibrant community.

Looking back, Azlin has a message for her younger self and anyone else facing uncertainty: “Not to worry as much.” Reflecting on her transition from homeschooling to high school, she realizes that many of her fears were unfounded. “Schoolwork wasn’t as bad coming back. It was about the same as homeschooling,” she says. Her advice is simple yet profound—stress less and embrace the journey.

Azlin Pfantz is more than just a student; she is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and community. As she prepares for her senior year and the adventures beyond, she carries with her the lessons learned and the friendships forged in Momence. Her story is one of inspiration and hope, a reminder that with determination and support, anything is possible.
